Hilde Johnson announces end of her term

The United Nations Secretary General’s Special Representative to South Sudan, Hilde Johnson has announced the end of her term in the country.

Hilde Johnson said she will be living her post and South Sudan by July this year.

Madam Johnson met President Salva Kiir this morning and informed him of her term end.

She told the media at the Office of the President that she has spent 3 years in the country –longer than expected.

“The new mandate, it is different from the one that was decided when I came in as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), which was in 2011,” said Ms Johnson.

“It is different and will imply changes also for the Mission.”

In July 2011, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed Hilde Johnson as his Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan.

Before her appointment by the Ban Ki-Moon, Ms. Johnson served as the Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF

Hilde Johnson earlier served as Minister and member of the Norwegian Government Cabinet from 1997 to 2005 during which she played an instrumental role in the negotiations leading to the completion of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army/Movement in 2005.
