Ghanaian footballer and former LaLiga star Raphael Dwamena on Saturday collapsed on the pitch during a match in the Albanian Super League and later passed away, according to multiple reports.

Dwamena died at the age of 28, after passing out during the match between his Egnatia side and Partizani Tirana.

According to The Sun newspaper, the incident happened in the 23rd minute and the game was called off with the score at 1-1.

The player was quickly rushed to the nearest hospital in Kavaja and was pronounced dead shortly after suffering another heart attack as he was being treated, The Sun reported.

Dwamena was capped nine times for his country and scored two goals.

In 2017, it was discovered he had a heart defect and he suffered numerous heart-related issues, which prompted the implantation of cardioverter-defibrillator in 2021 after collapsing in an Austrian Cup match.

His previous club Levante of the Spanish LaLiga League released a statement on social media following his demise.

“On behalf of #LevanteUD, we would like to express our sincere condolences for the passing of our former player, Raphael Dwamena. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time. His legacy at our club will always endure. RIP.”

“Our thoughts are with the family of Raphael Dwamena at this difficult time. Raphael represented Ghana wholeheartedly and paid his dues to the country until his unfortunate passing. We will forever miss him for his dedication to the National Coarse.”

According to BBC Sport, the Albania football federation has postponed all games scheduled in Albania this week.

“The AFL expresses its deepest condolences to the Dwamena family and the Egnatia club for this great loss that has shocked the entire Albanian football community,” the federation said.
