Equatoria governors asked to disarm herders

The People’s Liberal Party has called on the three governors of the Equatoria region to disarm cattle keepers to avoid more conflicts.

The statement follows random shooting in Maridi County in Western Equatoria State.

Peter Mayen, party chairman, told Eye Radio that the cattle keepers should return to their home states to allow farmers to cultivate.

“Our Party is calling on the governors of Equatoria region to conduct a massive disarmament of the cattle keepers and any other suspicious group that probably will be processing arms,” he said.

On Monday, cattle keepers shot randomly in the town after a grenade attack on a camp over the weekend. Three civilians and a soldier were killed in the shooting.

In April, President Kiir issued a decree, ordering all cattle keepers in Equatoria to go back to their respective states.

Most pastoralists come from Jonglei, Lakes and Warrap states. Some of them say they are in the region for pasture and security.
