The ceasefire monitoring body, CTSAMVM, issued a stern warning this morning, stating that South Sudan’s security situation has worsened since February due to persistent attacks by signatories to the 2018 revitalized peace agreement.
During a board meeting in Juba, Chairperson Maj. Gen. Teshome Anagawe Ayana declared that the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS) remains under “serious threat” from repeated violations and widespread violence.
The monitoring body documented a series of recent hostilities that have disrupted civilian life and humanitarian efforts across the country:
Upper Nile State: Aerial bombardments in Udier Payam, Longochuk County, on March 22 and 24.
Central Equatoria: The killing of civilians in the Khor Gal Tan gold mining area on March 28.
Greater Jonglei & Ruweng: Sustained fighting in Akobo and attacks in Abiemnhom, Ruweng Administrative Area.
“This situation should not be allowed to become the norm,” Maj. Gen. Ayana told the board. “The success of the agreement ultimately depends on the commitment of the signatory parties to prioritize dialogue over armed conflict.”
CTSAMVM underscored that lasting peace hinges on the political will of the parties to uphold the ceasefire and protect civilians.
The body also noted recent regional diplomatic engagements, including those by the High-Level Ad Hoc Committee for South Sudan (C5), as critical to maintaining the peace process.
The Chairperson urged all stakeholders to exercise restraint and put the interests of the South Sudanese people above partisan gain.
“I urge all stakeholders to work with regional and international partners to safeguard progress and prevent a relapse into widespread conflict,” Ayana concluded.
