Constituents accuse MPs of neglect

Voters have accused members of the national parliament of neglecting their constituencies.

They say the MPs do not consult their constituencies or inform them about government policies.

“We only see them maybe when they are for campaigns, when they are coming for their own occasions or functions that are being held. But they don’t come to inform us on what is happening,” said a constituent.

“There is no day whereby they came and brief those who voted for them and tell them what is happening in the parliament,” said another constituent.

“The MPs have no plan for their constituencies. When there is insecurity issue that is when they consult their constituency members like chiefs. But without insecurity issues, they don’t consult.”

The chairman of the constituency development fund, Siro Giarjouk Mariano, admitted that the concern of the people in the constituencies is genuine.

“There is logic somehow because when we began the new assembly after the Independence Day, there is no proper way of giving leave to the members. They are not able to go their constituencies because they have not been allocated money for transport so they can go,” Hon Giarjouk stressed.

“They have also not been given their money of annual emoluments so that they can go on leave.”

He said the Constituency Development Fund, which is intended to devolve resources to the grass root, has not been released since 2010.
