The government has confirmed that 18 people have died in an outbreak of Cholera in Juba.

The Minister of Health, Riek Gai Kok, says 171 cases of the epidemic have also been recorded since the beginning of the month.

Dr Gai says authorities have set up emergency centers in Juba.

“It has now been confirmed through our public health laboratory and up to date, we have 171 cases of cholera and 18 deaths due to cholera in different parts of Juba,” Dr Gai said.

“Nine of these [death] cases occurred in Juba Teaching Hospital and nine others occurred at home.”

The minister says the public can call 777 to seek emergency assistance or report suspected cases of the disease to 0955 66 81 48.

Last year, a similar cholera outbreak claimed 60 lives in the country in general.

The disease spread beyond the capital and into remote areas where it was difficult to get health care.
