CES traffic fatalities early year estimate down compared to 2023

Traffic-related deaths in Central Equatoria State have reduced from 19 in January 2023 to 10 in 2024 same month, according to a data Eye Radio obtained from the authorities.

Last year’s deaths were recorded from 306 road accidents compared 237 last year,  an indication of 32 percent decrease in cases.

‘The total number of traffic accidents recorded in January 2024 is 237, while the number of traffic accidents in January 2023 is 306. If you compare the same period last year and the current year, you will find that there is a decrease in the number of 78 accidents, according to the state Director of Traffic Police, Major General Zakharia Michael Taban.

“However, as for serious harm incidents, there was an increase in cases in January this year, amounting to 96, while in January 2023 there were 89. As for simple harm in January this year, we recorded 91 cases, and in the same period in 2023, we recorded 138 cases,” he added.

General Zakharia attributed the reduction in deaths related to accidents last January  to increase traffic awareness.

“This is a result of the citizen’s awareness of the accidents that caused death in In January this year there were 10 deaths, while in January 2023 there were 19 deaths.”

However, he told Eye Radio that most of these accidents occurred at night involving vehicles and motorcycles.

“There is an increase in people driving under the influence of alcohol, and most of these incidents occur at night.

In 2023, the state recorded a total of 3,165 accidents with 116 fatalities.
