Police authorities in Jonglei State have banned random shootings in the air during the festive season to avoid causing panic among the civilian population.

The order comes less than a week into the Christmas festival next Sunday.

Speaking to Eye Radio on December 18, Jonglei State State Police Commissioner said he directed the organized forces to ensure that no one shoots a gun as a sign of celebration.

Major General Elia Costa also said that anyone who disobeys the directives will be arrested.

“We want to celebrate a peaceful Christmas and New Year so I am urging all the citizens, especially those who are carrying guns and the organized forces not to shoot any gun in the air,” Costa said.

“So, anybody who will shoot in the air, we will arrest him automatically because shooting in the gun in the air makes people panic. So we are banning the shooting of the gun.”
