Newborn baby found inside pit latrine in Aweil. (-)

A baby girl dumped in a pit latrine by her 16-year-old mother has been retrieved alive and is responding well to treatment at Aweil Hospital in Northern Bahr el Ghazal while the underage mother is in a state of convulsion, a doctor said.

Dr. Santino Acirin Tong, Director of Aweil Civil Hospital said the police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) personnel found the baby inside a nearby toilet.

Dr. Acirin told Eye Radio the baby has since been rushed her to Aweil Civil Hospital where she is being treated.

He said the baby’s mother is in a state of unconsciousness due to the illegal procedure.

“The baby is in clinical health condition, and her mother is in convulsion. What happened was that a young girl gave birth to a baby in hiding and dropped her in the nearby latrine,” Acirin said in a WhatsApp message.

The newborn baby reportedly spent a day before being rescued by the civil defense.

According to Dr Acirin, the baby in a stable condition but the hospital is closely monitoring her health situation and that of the mother.

Northern Bahr el Ghazal state governor, Tong Akeen Ngor, visited the baby girl and her mother at the Aweil Civil Hospital earlier today.

Speaking at the hospital, he said the lactating mother is an underage.

“We learned that there’s a girl delivered a baby girl in Ayuang residential area, and she took her baby and dropped her in a bit latrine,” Akeen said.

“We brought the civil defense, and they rescued this girl from the bit latrine she is life in good health, she has only two days old, and the mother is sixteen years old which is underage.”

Governor Akeen said he discourages sexual acts with minors and called on people of reproductive age to shun abortion.
