Lobong directs Magwi authorities to probe looming influx of herders

The Governor of Eastern Equatoria State has directed Magwi authorities to urgently investigate alleged cattle influx into the County to avert the repeat of 2022 violent incident which claimed several lives.

“I have directed the commissioner of Magwi and the town clerk of Nimule to establish facts and then to let me know who are these groups, whose cattle are they and where they are coming from, and heading where?

Last week, some whistle blowers from Magwi County’s Nyolo Payam reported that herds of cattle were seen roaming at border of Central Equatoria with Magwi, expressing worries the herders may enter the county.

In his response to the alert, Governor Louise Lobong echoed the March 2022 farmers-herders violence in which claimed several lives.

The state governor believes that the herders are migrating in search of water and grazing land, but says they should approach state authorities for directives.

“And again, if that they are coming back base on lack of water to their animals or grass or due to insecurity, they should approach the state authority so that they should directed or offered what to do.”

Lokiliri locals raise alarm over influx of herders

Locals in Lokiri Payam of Central Equatoria State have raised an alarm over mass movement of livestock to cultivated areas, destroying unharvested crops.

According to Biastori Modi Modesto, Chief of Ngeribe Boma, the situation has caused panic among the local population, forcing households to evacuate the area.

“Those people came and they stay in place called Moyo Gali, they stayed there and left two days back to Aru Junction in a place called Kope – all of them are there now.

“The ones (herders) who are left behind, are the one collecting their remaining cows there and out of fear, the people with farms like seven or eight run away”, Chief Modesto confirmed to Eye Radio in an exclusive interview Monday morning.

Meanwhile Lokiliri Community Leader, Simon Pitia urged government to intervene and repatriate the cattle herders to protect farmlands from potential cattle encroachment.

“We would like the government to urgently intervene and retreat these cattle herders to their place of origin because for us the Lulubo people, we entirely depend on God’s blessing from the land.

“We are farmers, and we do our activities manually but now if these items are destroyed, how are we going to survive?

“We don’t have guns, we only want peace with the people as said by the President that people should stay in peace among themselves . So, the government should intervene in this matter.”

When contacted on the matter, Leone Abe who is Central Equatoria State Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement Agency declined to comment.

Farmers-herders conflict have been recurrent despite the 2018 Presidential order banning cattle herders from interfering with farms.

Yearly governors’ forum has repeated called for an end to herders’ interference with farming communities  but this has not bore any results.

Economist explains motives for proposed $402million Juba-Lobonok-Moli road

Economist Dr. Abraham Maliet Mamer has linked the significance of proposed 402 million US dollars for the construction of Juba-Lobonok-Moli road project to plans for gold exploration and broader economic development.

An Advisor in the Office of the Vice President for Economic Cluster, Dr Maliet explained that the road will connect Juba to Lobonok and extend to Moli, facilitating access to mineral-rich areas and boosting local trade.

“I saw there are deposits of gold. I cannot talk about the quantity, how much it is, but I can attest that there is gold there. The gold is not not explored, nobody digs it. People go and pick it”, he said.

Speaking to Eye Radio about the project, Dr. Mamer revealed that gold deposits in Lobonok remain largely untapped due to poor road infrastructure, which deters investors and hampers security.

“I even myself participated and picked myself one or two small gold. So there is gold there. But because of the bad roads, you know Kit one and Kit Two all pass through Lobonok and they are very rough rivers. So, you can never get to the bottom of this.

“No investor will come if there is no road, and because of the absence of good roads, it also brings insecurity because these guys (armed people) are roaming here and there, so they can actually ambush anybody coming there. So that’s why the gold cannot come to Juba.

“But if you build roads there, then there is security access and good roads will bring good security responses.

“Also with the gold now, you can be able to map it and quantify it, and then now invite investors, because you assure them that there is access, there is security, and so on.”

The economist emphasized that the road will not only support mineral exploration but also unlock the region’s agricultural potential.

“Alongside gold  in Lobonok, there is a huge agricultural potential. I also have seen that. If we get this road done, then we will be able to benefit from the local produce to Juba.

“So, Juba-Lobonok-Moli Road, I think, can contribute greatly to bringing the consumption together with the production. So, that is my take. Another thing that I want to add. It has not been approved yet” he stressed.

Dr. Mamer clarified misconceptions about the project’s funding, noting that the $402 million budgeted for the road is yet to be approved.

The proposal will undergo further review by the Ministry of Roads, the Economic Cluster, and Parliament before implementation.

He also highlighted the long-term benefits of the project, including enhanced security, local trade, and community development.

The Juba-Lobonok-Moli road is expected to transform the region by improving access, boosting economic activity, and fulfilling the vision of bringing development to rural areas.
