Calm returns to Maban refugee camp after armed man escapes mob justice

Calm has returned to Gendrassa camp in Maban County of Upper Nile state after alleged intrusion of an armed man into the camp caused panic among the Sudanese refugees last week, according to the assistance commissioner of refugee affairs in the area.

Unna Stephen told Eye Radio on Monday  that Gendrassa refugee camp witnessed tension over an armed man who sneaked at night into the refugee camp with a gun and refused to hand over to the South Sudan Peoples Défense Force.

“It happened at 1:00 night, this was an isolated case. Actually, they (refugees) tried to eliminate somebody who was suspected of being a soldier in the camp, and it happened that he ran away from the camp.”

Stephen told Eye Radio that the Sudanese soldier escaped from the camp after refusing to hand over his gun to the camp police.

“He refused to report himself to the SSPDF or to the camp police and decided to run away from the camp”, he said.

His reported escape brought calm in the calm. “To the best knowledge of my mine, the camp is very safe and under control.”

The camp is currently is hosting more than 200,000 Sudanese refugees.

According to Stephen, Maban County continues to receive influx of Sudanese refugees.

“We are receiving a number of them daily, we received like seven households through Kaya over the weekend and  the number keeps coming.”

Maban County of Upper Nile state has four refugee camps including Gendrassa and Yusuf Batil with Doro being the largest camp situated near the town of Bunj.
