SSPL: Merrikh Bentiu hold Kator FC to a goal less draw

Kator FC strengthened its lead in the South Sudan Premier League after a goalless draw with Al-Merrikh Bentiu in the ninth week of the competition.

Kator entered the match at the top of the table with 20 points, while Al-Merrikh Bentiu was in fourth place with 18 points. From the first whistle, Kator pressed forward, using the speed of its players to try and secure an early goal that could unsettle their opponents.

Despite the early pressure, Al-Merrikh Bentiu’s defense held strong. However, under sustained attacks, Al-Merrikh ’s defenders committed a foul inside the box, leading to a penalty for Kator in the 44th minute. Unfortunately for Kator, the penalty was missed, and the first half ended goalless.

In the second half, both teams returned with hopes of breaking the deadlock. Al-Merrikh Bentiu started stronger, forcing Kator to rely on counterattacks. Kator played with an advanced defensive system, attempting to control the midfield to disrupt Al-Merrikh ’s offensive plays.

Kator’s midfield worked hard to transition the ball from defense to attack, searching for gaps in Al-Merrikh ’s solid defense. However, Marrickh remained disciplined, limiting Kator’s movement and preventing them from finding space.

In the final minutes, Al-Merrikh had a golden opportunity to score but failed to capitalize. Similarly, Kator had a late chance from a corner kick, but Al-Merrikh ’s goalkeeper made a crucial save.

With the final whistle, the match ended in a 0-0 draw. The result keeps Kator at the top of the league, while Al-Merrikh Bentiu moved up to third place, with Koryom with 19 point .

Patrick Godi – who is representing youth said they listened to the government delegation on Monday about its response concerning the root causes of the conflict in the country.

“So we welcomed the report which the government presented. The atmosphere was very warm and very friendly, and that session in fact is worthy to mention that it was co-chaired by General Kuol Manayng alongside General Pagan Amum.

The response revolved around political and leadership issues, economic and resource management, social cohesion, structural and historical issues, and also geo-politics influencing the country.

Today, the parties were supposed to convene and consolidate all their views and analysis on the agenda of root causes of conflict in South Sudan, before constituting joint technical team.

However, it has been adjourned to Wednesday.

BoSS launches fast payment system to ease transactions across sectors

The Bank of South Sudan has announced the establishment of National Instant Payment system to ease transactions between persons, financial and government institutions and businesses.

The financial regulator launched the initiative in collaboration with AfricaNenda, an independent African-led organization working toward accelerating expansion of inclusive instant payment systems across the continent.

According to an official statement seen by Eye Radio, the system is designed to enable real-time, secure, and cost-effective transactions to harmonize systems of the financial agencies operating in the country.

It said the transformative move to modernize financial infrastructures aligns with broader efforts to implement other critical infrastructures, such as Automated Clearing House and Real-Time Gross Settlement systems.

The statement added that, a road map is due to be developed to capacitate the country’s financial institutions in order to better manage the system.

The development is said to advance the Bank of South Sudan commitment to provide financial services to the citizens.

Excerpt from IR, a U. S Based digital service provider, providing real-time, fault-tolerant management for business-critical computer systems and applications, things have changed a bit explains how this system work

What is an instant payment?

These faster payments systems allow transfers to be processed directly between banks and financial organizations without the involvement of intermediaries such as clearing houses or correspondent banks. This means that transfers can be made very quickly and securely.

In this new era, consumers, businesses and payments stakeholders increasingly expect instant payments to be a standard feature offered by their banks and financial institutions. They’re demanding the facility to transfer and receive payments and to access money between bank accounts not only domestically, but internationally, in real time.

Those financial organizations who don’t offer instant payments, or those countries who lag behind with instant payment services can expect to lose valuable businessInstant payment systems enable consumers, businesses, and financial institutions to transfer money between bank accounts in near real-time. This means organizations can improve their liquidity and cash flow, as funds are transferred in seconds, rather than having to wait hours or even days for funds to clear.

Instant payments offer a faster, more affordable way to keep track of funds, obviously making funds available immediately, and streamlining the payment process.

Different instant payment methods

The terms instant payments and Real-Time Payments (RTP) are often thought to mean the same thing, but there are differences between the two.

Real time Payments (RTP)

In the US, RTP is one of two instant payment rails (the infrastructure that moves money from one party to another) that process instant payments. RTP is operated by the Automated Clearing House (ACH), a member organization owned by all the major US banks.

How do instant payments work?

While the process of executing instant payment transactions may look long and involved, the steps are fully automated and completed in a matter of seconds, with limited human involvement.

With recipients receiving funds immediately, the speed of this process makes instant payments a convenient option for a variety of financial transactions, including account-to-account payments, bill payments, and even eCommerce transactions.

  1. Payment initiation. The sender, who can be a merchant, business or individual initiates the payment transaction through a mobile application, online banking platform or possibly even in person.
  2. Payment information sent. The sender provides the relevant information such as recipient’s details, account number, amount or any other requested information.
  3. For payouts, the sender’s bank or financial institution validates the payment request, this includes verification of account balance and fraud checks. For payings, the receiving financial institution validates the request and obtains the payer’s approval to send payment.
  4. After the payment is authorized, it’s routed through the payment service, either FedNow or RTP.
  5. Notification. On the recipient’s end, their financial institution is notified of the payment request and validates it, then notifies the receiver of the pending transfer
  6. Funds Transfer. After checks are finalized, the funds are transferred from the sender’s bank account and delivered to the receiver’s bank account.

The features and benefits of instant payments

Instant payments offer a host of benefits for small businesses, large enterprises, individuals’ financial organizations and even for the global economy as a whole.

For example;

  • Outstanding bills and time sensitive payments can be settled more quickly, which improves liquidity.
  • Business partners benefit from faster payments, which makes collaborating easier and more streamlined.
  • There is far more transparency with instant payments regarding incoming and outgoing payments.
  • Faster payments also reduce the mechanics required to process payment transactions while still keeping transaction costs low.
  • As instant payments take only a few seconds, transactions no longer need to be manually checked or monitored.
  • Instant payments allow organizations to improve their cash flow, giving them more time to focus on their core business.
  • Banks and FIs can utilize instant payments to develop innovative financial services and strengthen their competitive position.

Recalling an instant payment

While there are a myriad benefit with the instant payment system, the downside is that they are difficult if not impossible to recall. While a standard bank transfer has to go through the clearing process, allowing time to make corrections or recall the transaction, an instant payment is set up so that the money reaches the recipient’s bank account within seconds, making it complicated to retrieve the money.

For this reason, senders should always ensure that the recipient’s details such as IBAN, name and account number are checked and correct.

In the last few years, most financial institutions across the globe have adopted instant payments solutions, and the number is rising exponentially.

Church leaders to reach out to groups outside R-ACRSS, Tumaini

Church leaders have created a mediation initiative to reach out to various political stakeholders who are neither signatories to the 2018 peace deal nor delegates to the Tumaini initiative.

In statement to Eye Radio newsroom, the church leaders said the initiative involved in sideline consultations, will seek to know the position and views of stakeholders and the intention is not to convince stake holders to join Tumaini or not.

The religious leaders said they were keen to see a conflict resolution process that is all inclusive and acceptable to all stakeholders without any reservations.

He added that the objective is not to convince stakeholders to join Tumaini.

The initiative, according to Dr. Paul Yugusuk who is the Archbishop of Central Equatoria Internal Province of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan the group, is the only guarantee for sustainable and durable peace in South Sudan.

“We are in the process of consulting key stakeholders to the South Sudan peace process including our own senior church leaders, civil society representatives, delegations at the Tumaini peace process, senior government officials, senior officials of the opposition parties as well as the non-signatories to R-ACRSS who are part of Tumaini Peace Initiative and those who are not.

Bishop Yugusuk added that the Church Leaders Mediation Initiative will develop a detailed report on the consultation, which will be shared with the South Sudan Council of Churches. Continue reading “Church leaders to reach out to groups outside R-ACRSS, Tumaini”

Lakes State reports 223 cholera cases, 9 deaths in Yirol and Awerial

Lakes State has confirmed 223 cases of cholera in Greater Yirol, including Yirol West, Yirol East, and Awerial counties, with 21 new cases reported in on Monday and Tuesday.

Twelve of the new cases were registered in Yirol East and 9 in Awerial.

The cholera outbreak, which has been ongoing for several months, has claimed nine lives between December 2024 and January 2025.

In an interview with EYE Radio on Thursday, Dr. Maker Malok, the Director General of the Ministry of Health in Lakes State, provided an update on the situation. “We currently have a total of 263 cholera cases across Yirol East, Yirol West, and Awerial counties,” he stated.

Of the 263 cases, 203 have recovered and been discharged, while nine people have died from the disease. Dr. Malok also revealed that 86 samples were sent to Juba for confirmation, with nine of them testing positive for cholera.

The Ministry of Health has declared Lakes State a cholera zone. A response team, consisting of health officers contracted by the World Health Organization (WHO), has been deployed across the three affected counties.

“We are working hard to reach all affected areas,” Dr. Malok added.

One of the major challenges in curbing the outbreak, according to Dr. Malok, is that many communities continue to rely on untreated water from the Nile River. “We are doing our best to educate people about the importance of safe water use, but many are still unaware of the risks, which is why new cases continue to emerge.”

The cholera outbreak in Lakes State has now been ongoing for two months, and health authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Surveillance officers are still awaiting updates on new cases.

How War in Sudan and Lack of Pest Control Led to Massive Crop Losses for South Sudan’s Farmers:

Large scale grain farmers across Upper Nile region along the border with Sudan have incurred huge losses after quelea birds ravaged their grain farms last year, a situation an official blamed on the war in the neighboring country which rendered its trans-boundary pest control institutions dysfunctional and South Sudan’s inadequate early preparations.

Large scale farmers in Upper Nile have long battled against pests that threaten their crops.

But as the conflict in neighboring Sudan where agricultural activities have halted special in the White Nile region, this fight has even becoming even harder as Upper Nile has become a breading place for the birds that are also looking for food to feed on.

For farmers in South Sudan’s Upper Nile region, the lack of pest control compounded the difficulties they already face.

Resident of Kaka County in Upper Nile state, Tayeb Ajanq Okig who is one of the many farmers reeling from the losses recounted his ordeal to Eye Radio.

“I planted 3000 acres and lost about 2,700 acres because the birds ate and destroyed them.  I lost about 50 barrels. My losses amounted to SSP 100 million.

“This cost is without the seeds and the rest of the agricultural inputs. Here in Kaka, we have about 161 tractors and we planted 121 thousand acres”, said Ajang.

Another farmer Kur Dau Mayiik who said he invested tens of thousands of dollars has blamed the losses on the lack of support from the authorities to spray the birds.

As such farmers counted it upon themselves, but the cost of praying individually was expensive to affords.

“Most farmers did not spray pesticides this year because of the high cost, as the cost of the jerry can of pesticides and the expenses related to spraying reached two million pounds per hundred acres.

Upper Nile State Minister of Agriculture agrees with the farmers.

“The issue of the farmers is true, the delay in the spray plane affected the produce. This produce was going to be injected in the markets in South Sudan, and this year we have a number of refugees and returnees in the country.

He says the effects are being felt most acutely in several counties bordering with Sudan where the destructive quelea birds were more widespread last year.

The minister said the state was bracing for a bumper harvest due to sufficient rain when the state witnessed a surge in pests, particularly quelea birds that started damaging early-planted crops in Manyo, Kodok, Wadakona and Kaka areas in August.

He admitted the delays in the delivery of pesticides which later turned ineffective, couple with the breakdown of coordination with their counterpart in Sudan led to severe consequences.

“They sent a plane to spray pesticides but the pesticide they provided didn’t work.

Without the right pesticide, the birds continued to destroy the crops.

“The plane was forced to return to Juba without completing its mission. We need the right supplies to protect our farmers. If the government can’t provide the necessary pesticides, this cycle will continue”, the minister added.

The Food and Agriculture Organization or FAO, has been instrumental in helping South Sudan manage pests like locusts and birds, which often cause devastating damage to crops.

But as the crisis in Sudan intensifies, the region is seeing a halt in essential pest control operations.

According to FAO’s plant protection officer, the coordination between Sudan and South Sudan in combating pests has traditionally been strong.

However, with Sudan’s resources stretched thin due to ongoing conflict, the situation has shifted.

“Sudan has been a leader in pest control. They have extensive resources for migratory bird units and desert locust control mechanisms, which have helped keep pest numbers in check across the region.

“Now, the lack of pest control is creating serious problems for farmers, particularly in rural areas. If locusts or birds are left unchecked, they can wipe out an entire season’s worth of crops in just hours”, he said.

The ripple effect of Sudan’s conflict is clear: without coordinated pest control, food security in South Sudan hangs in the balance.

With the ongoing instability in Sudan, the resources necessary to combat pests and secure food supplies remain in short supply.

FAO, plant protection officer Mori said to address the challenges, FAO working closely with South Sudan’s government, is striving to put a more effective plan in place for the upcoming season, to prevent further crop loss.

“Last year, we didn’t plan well but this year, to make sure that we put a proper plan in place, and make sure that the farmers in those counties are supported in this coming season.

As we really know, the sub-Saharan Africa, if you didn’t manage it, it is really a cause for security issues.

But the resilience of its people—farmers, traders, and officials—offers hope. With more support, and with cooperation across borders, South Sudan can weather this storm and begin to build a more secure future for its people.
