The Minister of Information, Ateny Wek Ateny, says the government is in discussions with Meta and TikTok to enable digital monetization for local content creators in South Sudan.

Ateny who is also the official government spokesperson, however says that all digital users must operate within the law, warning that legal protection is reserved for those who comply with regulations.

He said digital platforms represent a major economic opportunity, adding that ongoing negotiations aim to bring monetization systems directly into the country so creators can earn income locally.

The minister stated that the initiative will promote inclusion, saying at least 40 percent of online content opportunities should be directed to women creators.

“We are actually negotiating with Meta so that the monetization comes, you know, to our country. And also with TikTok, we will monetize very soon. Don’t forget the cyber crime and abuse of computer acts is operational. Because should you continue, and I will make sure that at least 40% of the posts goes to women,” he said.

He stressed that content should be constructive and not insulting, noting that only positive and creative material will qualify for monetization benefits.

He also reminded users that cybercrime and digital abuse laws remain fully in force, warning that violations will be addressed under existing legislation.

“Anybody operating must ensure you are within the law. Don’t go personal, don’t break the law, and you will actually receive the protection of the ministry. But I only give protection to those who operate within the law, not outside the law. Digital platforms are a very lucrative space. We are now working to monetize so that the monetization process comes to our country. So, when you are a content creator, you will be receiving money,” he added.
