A political analyst has described the participation of President Salva Kiir in the UN General Assembly in New York as an opportunity for him to talk about the elections, sanctions, and arms embargo.

President Kiir left for the US on Sunday, September 17.

Professor Abraham Kuol says he expects President Kiir to tell the meeting about issues that are facing the implementation of the peace agreement.

Dr. Kuol also views Kiir’s participation as an opportunity for him to mobilize the international community to support the people of South Sudan through elections or a peaceful transition.

Prof. Abraham Kuol, the Dean of the School of Social and Economic Studies at the University of Juba told Eye Radio on Monday, September 18 that the meeting in New York is an opportunity for President Kiir to speak to the world leaders.

“President Kiir should be able to tell the UNGA assembly about the issues that are facing the implementation of the peace agreement and also the way forward,” Abraham said.

“This could be an opportunity for the president to be able to mobilize the international community for support of the people of South Sudan either through elections or through a peaceful transition.”

He added that Kiir can utilize the chance to showcase the issues that they handled and the issues that are pending and those the unity government is going to handle.

“The president’s visits to the UNGA assembly this year is something that could be applauded and appreciated because it’s come with several good things that will be able to help this country,” said Abraham.

“This country has several senior generals who have been sanctioned, several government senior officials like ministers have been sanctioned, there are issues of the armed embargo, there are issues of also public financial reform that has been push by IMF,” he said.

“I remember almost two years ago there’s a list that was given for arms embargo to be removed and they have to meet some basic requirements, and I think there were four or five items that the government supposed to work on,”

“This is an opportunity for the president to go and showcase the issues that they handled and the issues that are pending and how the government is going to handle those things.”

According to his office, President Kiir will address the UN General Assembly on the status of the implementation of the peace agreement and the steps the country is undertaking to prepare for the 2024 general elections.

The Summit agenda, “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all”.
