Safe drugs are now available after more than 100 companies have been checked and registered to import real medicines.

This is to stop entry of fake drugs and expired food items from the neighboring countries where most of imports come from.

The health ministry has, on several occasions, seized and burnt some of the expired goods that are smuggled into the country.

“According to our statistics, we have about 55 drugs companies which have been registered in South Sudan. And for the pharmacies, the registration exercise is still going on,” said Dr. Peter Aguek, Director-General at the Drugs and Food Control Authority.

“Last report from Western Bahr El-Ghazal State capital Wau shows that about 65 pharmacies have been registered in Wau town. Other states have not sent their reports to us.”

Dr Aguek said his department has enough personnel on the borders for monitoring the entry of products into the country.

He added that there are traditional doctors who are working in South Sudan illegally, and they sell herbs which he says have negative side effect on people’s health.

He cautioned the public not to attend treatment at these traditional clinics.
