Teachers in Kajo-Keji County of central Equatoria state have started receiving their monthly chalk allowances since it was pledged in 2013.

The County Spokesperson, Baden Alikana, told Eye Radio’s Sun Down program that each teacher is receiving 300 South Sudanese Pounds in allowances for September.

“Actually teachers are very happy; this is their third day for getting the chalk allowance because they started since last Friday,” he said.

However, Mr Baden said that teachers in grade 16 and those in nursery schools are not being paid the chalk allowances.

“Teachers who are below grade 16 and those in the office are not expected to get their chalk allowances and this has brought a very big problem among the teachers and it’s like its dividing them,” he added.

There have been concerns over lack of teachers across the country. Many teachers quit due to poor pay, according to officials. Most of them seek employments from Non-Governmental Organizations.

Mr Baden said the payment of the chalk allowances is part of a policy by the government of Central Equatoria State to motivate teachers.
