The 400% salary adjustment for civil servants and members of the organized forces is set to be backdated to July 1, the minister of information has said.

The salary rise was approved into law by President Salva Kiir on Monday, August 14, 2023.

This came after the national parliament last week passed the 2.1 trillion pounds fiscal year 2023/2024 budget with a 400% salary increment after SPLM-IO lawmakers boycotted the sitting, demanding a 600% adjustment.

The fiscal year budget was passed in consideration of the 400% salary increment which was recommended by the cabinet.

Speaking to journalists in Juba yesterday, information minister Michael Makuei said the new salary structure has come into effect after its approval.

“The 400% will be received in July with the new budget, the new budget starts with effect from the 1st of July,” said Makuei.

“If it is starting from the 1st of July it means that by the end of July, you will receive your new adjusted salary,” he said.

“It will be worked out now, and people will receive their amended 400% salary,” the government spokesperson said.

“The 600% will be in the supplementary budget and the supplementary budget will be within this year’s budget, the budget of this year will go up to June 30th next year.”

“The increment will be within this same year, the 400 will be effective within July. But the salary has not come.”
