2 schoolgirls killed in Torit

Two schoolgirls were killed in Torit yesterday, Eastern Equatoria State authorities have said.

The two girls, aged 16 and 18 were both pupils of Mura-hatiha Primary School.

According to officials, they were in a group of five walking to a village in Hiyala Payam, Torit County. The children were carrying some food items they had bought from the market.

Officials told Eye Radio that two others were wounded in the incident.

Anthony Ladu Tombe, Chief Inspector of Police in Torit County, says one child was on killed on the spot and the other passed away at the hospital.

“We learnt of the incident through phone calls and we informed the police commissioner. At that time he was busy,” Mr Tombe explained.

“So, the commissioner of Torit provided his car to take them to the hospital. Their state was a bit fine but this morning, the younger lady passed away.”

The children wounded children are being treated at the Torit hospital. The State Minister of Gender, Margret Idwa, condemned the attack during a visit to the hospital.

“When I see a young girl like that as a mother, I fell that I’m the one who is killed and I’m hurt,” Ms Idwa stressed.

Police are still investigating the incident.
