Two men have been shot dead by police in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, the state authorities have said.

Five others were injured in the clashes in Aweil South County.

The Commissioner said the fighting started when unarmed civilians clashed with police officers in a market.

The county authorities had earlier banned smoking of shisha in the town. They say police were chasing those who sell shisha illegally in the market.

The Commissioner of Aweil South, Jel Mangom Yel, who rushed to the scene immediately, confirmed the incident to Eye Radio.

“I went to the market and I saw two bodies of those killed, lying on the ground,” he explained.

Commissioner Jel said those injured have been taken to Aweil civil hospital.

He said investigation has been launched to identify those who killed the civilians.
