16 dead in grisly road accident in Uganda

At least 16 people are said to have died and several others injured after a bus rammed into a stationary trailer at a trading center along Kampala-Gulu highway on Friday morning.

Uganda Police Force said in a press statement, that the passenger bus traveling from Kampala to Gulu crashed into the trailer around midnight.

Local media reports indicate that  12 people died on spot while 4 others died after reaching hospital.

The police said the dead bodies were conveyed to Anyeke Health IV pending postmortem.

“Cause of the accident is yet to be established but preliminary findings indicate wrong parking by the trailer driver with no warning signs. It’s a very unfortunate incident, we call for calmness from members of the public, our condolences to the bereaved families,” the police said.

According to the Daily Monitor newspaper, Uganda has witnessed an increase in the number of road crash reports of late.

The East African country has reportedly recorded 104 road accidents in two days, between December 30 to January 1, out of which 28 crashes led to loss of 35 lives and 114 serious injuries.
