The UN Mission in the country says unknown gunmen shot dead an IDP inside its camp near Bentiu in Unity state over the weekend.

In a statement, UNMISS says its personnel heard gunshots on Sunday night. They later found a body of a woman shot in the back.

Referring to eyewitnesses accounts, UNMISS says two armed men in military uniforms were seen shooting the IDP dead inside the camp.

The gunmen then left the site and fled into the surrounding bush.

UNMISS says the identities and motives of the assailants are still unknown, but the matter is being investigated.

“Any attack on a protection-of-civilians site constitutes a direct assault against the United Nations and may constitute a war crime,” partly reads the statement.

This is not the first time that an UNMISS protection-of-civilians site has come under attack by armed elements.

Last week, a similar incident left an IDP dead. Six others were wounded.
