Seven victims of the Maridi fuel tank explosion are undergoing plastic surgery at the Juba Teaching Hospital.

More than 200 people were killed when a fuel tanker exploded in September on its way to Maridi in Western Equatoria State.

The patients who have been operated are among some 60 victims who were admitted to the Juba Teaching Hospital.

Save the Children hired three doctors including, a surgeon and nurses, to perform reconstructive plastic surgery on the seven patients, including children.

Peter Walsh is the Save the Children country director; he spoke to Eye Radio this morning.

“Once we’ve done reconstructive surgery, they will need constant physiotherapy, either in-patient or outpatient, for flexibility,” said Mr Walsh, “because bruises contract and it may require further therapy in two or three months.”

The government earlier initiated an investigation to establish circumstances which could have caused the tragedy.

However, up now, the findings are yet to be released.
