Yambio hosts regional conference on LRA

A three-day regional conference on enhancing security for the civilians against attacks by the Lord’s Resistance Army is ongoing in Yambio town.

The conference, which opened yesterday, is being attended by representatives from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Uganda and South Sudan.

The Acting Minister of Information in Western Equatoria state, Simon Ngbidigi told Eye Radio’s Dawn Program that the conference is also looking at how to help people affected by the activities of the LRA.

“The objectives of the conference are to address problems of LRA victims and to improve coordination network on the activities of the LRA,” said Mr Ngbidigi.

The LRA is an anti-Ugandan government violent armed group led by Joseph Kony. It is notorious for committing human rights violations including murder, mutilation, rape, widespread abductions of children and adults, sexual slavery, and looting of villages in Uganda and its neighboring countries.

Early this month, the UN Secretary-General said Joseph Kony is possibly hiding in Kafia Kinji area, between South Darfur and Western Bahr el-Ghazal state.

In 2010, U.S President Barrack Obama signed into law the LRA Disarmament and Northern Uganda Recovery Act, to support regional efforts to end the atrocities of the LRA.

The strategy seeks to help the Governments of Uganda, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan to mitigate and end the threat posed to civilians and regional stability by the LRA.

It also seeks to increase protection of civilians, the apprehension or removal of Joseph Kony and senior LRA commanders from the battlefield, the promotion of defections of remaining LRA fighters, and the provision of continued humanitarian relief to affected communities.
