WFP airdrops food in Twic East

The World Food Program has started airlifting food assistance to thousands of internally displaced people in Twic East County, Jonglei State.

The County commissioner, Dau Akoi Jurkuch, says this is the first food aid in the last four months.

Mr Dau says the food supply is resuming for nearly 37,000 IDPs in the county. He says his community has prepared the ground for airdrops.

“We prepared the field for airdrop and we are ready waiting for the plane to drop the food,” Mr Akoi confirmed.

With the intervention of WFP, Mr Akoi says he expects that his county will be free of hunger next year.

The spokesman for WFP in South Sudan, George Forminyen, says more food will be airdropped to other parts of the county next week.

“We have started bringing in the food using airlifts and later on in next week, we will continue to airdrop to provide assistance to people in Mabior area,” said Mr Forminyen.

Mr Forminyen says WFP and its partners have been using mobile operations to reach conflict-affected areas with food assistance.
