UNSC to region on asset freezes

Author : | Published: Monday, November 21, 2016

A panel of experts has urged the UN Security Council to notify authorities in East Africa to comply with recent asset freezes imposed on some South Sudanese individuals.

The experts made the call in a report to the incumbent president of the Security Council last week.

The letter comes after a confirmation by the experts that General Peter Gatdet, a former commander loyal to Dr Riek Machar, travelled from Khartoum to Nairobi last month, and was still there.

General Peter Gatdet is under UN sanctions for his role in the conflict that started in December 2013.

He is among six generals, three from each side of the conflict, who were banned from traveling and had their assets frozen in July, 2015.

In the letter, the experts recommended that the council should urge bodies regulating banking institutions in Kenya and Uganda to issue out a press release “encouraging State and commercial banks in Kenya and Uganda to implement the freeze”.

The letter notes that this will ensure adherence to the provisions of the sanctions.
