The UN mission in the country has condemned the shooting of civilians at its camp in Malakal on Wednesday.

One civilian was killed and another six IDPs were wounded went the militants attack the camp last evening.

“The UNMISS condemns in the strongest possible terms the fatal shooting this evening around 18:00 hours local time of an IDP inside the Mission’s protection-of-civilians site at its compound outside Malakal,” it said in a statement.

The wounded are currently receiving treatment at the hospital inside the UNMISS compound, and one is said to be in a critical condition.

Both the SPLA and the SPLM in Opposition claim that there was shooting inside the camp, which killed one person and injured seven others.

However, they blamed each other for the shooting.

“Forces of Riek Machar attacked and targeted some people who went to the UN base,” claimed Col Philip Aguer, SPLA spokesperson. “They fired at people whom they think they don’t support rebellion.”

The deputy military spokesperson of the SPLA-In opposition, Dickson Gatluak, said government soldiers inside the camp were responsible for the shooting.
