The Ministry of Higher Education has ordered the reopening of the University of Bahr Al Ghazal but maintained the newly proposed tuition fee structure.

This comes three weeks after the university students went on strike over the increment of tuition fees by the administration which prompted the closure of the campus.

The new tuition structure indicates that a student of economics who used to pay 40,000 SSP, will now pay 150,000 SSP, while a student of medicine who was paying 50,000 SSP will pay 175,000 SSP.

Speaking during a visit by a delegation from the Ministry of Higher Education, Undersecretary Dr. Adil Athanasio says, the tuition fees proposed by the University administration will remain the same.

But the students will pay in installments.

” We made a comparative analysis concerning the fees and we thought that let us come and disseminate this. The ministerial order focuses on two or three aspects;

One is, that the general admission fees of one hundred twenty-five thousand are going to remain as it is, and one hundred seventy-five thousand is going to remain as it is for the students from science-based and Arts-based colleges

But they are made to be paid in three installments that is one thing,  the other thing is the reduction for the private and foreign students that is $800, $600 to $400 and $200.

Dr. Authanasio stressed that the Ministry is facing a challenge in admission for students expected to come from Sudan and East Africa.

He appeals to the students to accept the order.

” We have other challenges that we told the students. The challenge is, that we are expecting students coming from Sudan and East Africa and we want to absorb them. So we appeal to the student to accept this.”

For his part, the Vice Chancellor of Bahr Al Gazal University Dr. Victor Loku says the University will commence with work immediately and he urged the students to go and register for the new academic year.

“We would like the students to go and register, the staff are allowed to present the results of the supplementary that were distorted and then the senate will have to decide on the results of the students so that we have to plan for a new timetable. We request our sons and daughters not to delay.”
