The peace monitoring body RJMEC has expressed deep concern over reports of renewed fighting between the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) and the SPLA-IO in Walgak, Akobo County of Jonglei State.

According to the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission, the clashes on Sunday pose a serious threat to the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement.

RJMEC condemned the violence, saying it undermines the country’s fragile peace process, endangers the safety and security of civilians, and risks reversing the gains made since the signing of the peace agreement.

The Commission called on all parties to immediately cease hostilities, exercise maximum restraint, and resolve their differences through dialogue in line with the provisions of the Revitalized Peace Agreement.

RJMEC reiterated the importance of adhering to the peace agreement and urged all signatories to prioritise peaceful engagement to safeguard the country’s stability and protect civilians from further violence.
