WAU, South Sudan – Police in Western Bahr el Ghazal State have launched an investigation into the killing of a 29-year-old man whose body was found with a gunshot wound along the Mboro–Wau road.

State police spokesperson Lt. Col. Santino Uduol Mayen said the victim, identified only as Erin, was discovered dead on July 1.

According to the police spokesperson, the body was taken to Wau Teaching Hospital for a postmortem examination before it was released to the family for burial.

“The body of a person identified as Mr. Erin, a 29-year-old South Sudanese national from the Chatt tribe, was discovered with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The body was taken to Wau Teaching Hospital for a postmortem examination before it was released to the family for burial,” Lt. Col. Uduol said.

He said police have opened a criminal case at Lokoloko Police Station and launched investigations to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing.

Uduol urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing any information that could assist investigators.

The incident comes a day after two separate attacks were reported on roads in Western Bahr el Ghazal.

On June 30, unknown gunmen ambushed a commercial vehicle on the Basilia Road at Jebel Atali in Gbolingbo, injuring one passenger.

Later the same day, armed criminals reportedly robbed a motorcycle carrying three passengers travelling from Mboro to Wau, making away with the motorcycle and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police say investigations into all three incidents are ongoing.
