A religious leader says faith-based organizations can be useful in rebuilding trust between the government and Western countries.

The Bishop of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of South Sudan says religious group can act as goodwill ambassadors to foreign countries with vital interest in South Sudan.

The government has expressed disappointment that some Western countries have not condemned what it describes as a failed coup.

While western countries themselves such as the United States said they have not seen evidence of a coup attempt in Juba.

Bishop Elias Taban told Eye Radio from Yei that the faith-based groups can help restore trust between western governments and the government of South Sudan.

“It won’t take a long time to get the U.S community and even the U.S government to believe in the government of South Sudan and what we are doing,” said Bishop Taban, “because correct messages are not being sent out; everybody has got a political interest.”

Bishop Elias Taban urges the government to engage all the churches in the country in the peace and reconciliation efforts.

He also said that the church has lobbied for infrastructural equipment in the United States.

Bishop Elias said the equipment is waiting for clearance and transportation to help in the road and other infrastructural development in South Sudan.
