The fourth accused in the Nasir Incident trial, Lieutenant General Gabriel Duop Lam, has accused South Sudan’s military authorities of unlawful arrest, torture, and prolonged detention.

General Lam made the allegations on Monday while presenting his defence statement before the Special Court during the 98th session of the trial.

He told the court that he was arrested on March 4, 2025, at Bilpam, the headquarters of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF).

The senior army officer described his arrest as “random and unprocedural,” arguing that his position as Deputy Chief of Defence Forces required consultation and approval under the Revitalized Peace Agreement.

General Lam further alleged that he was detained in an underground military intelligence facility, where he was chained by his legs for seven months.

He told the court that the conditions of his detention amounted to physical and psychological torture, citing inadequate food, lack of medical treatment, and limited access to basic sanitation.

Lam, who said he has a history of hypertension, claimed he was denied proper medical care despite his health condition.

He also alleged that three bodyguards of First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar were later transferred to the same detention facility and subjected to similar treatment.

The fourth accused denied any involvement in the Nasir incident, saying he only received information about the fighting through military command channels and social media.

General Lam told the court that he informed the investigation committee that he did not order the White Army to attack the SSPDF forces in Nasir.

The Special Court adjourned proceedings until Wednesday, July 22, when General Gabriel Duop Lam is expected to continue presenting his defence statement.
