A 60-year-old man was killed and another person injured after lightning struck them during a rainstorm in Juba on Friday, according to a family member.
The deceased, identified as Philip Longuta Salah, was reportedly hunting river ducks when he was struck by lightning.
His son, Jim Justin, who is visually impaired, said his father was rushing home after heavy rain began on the eastern bank of the Nile River in Juba.
“The deceased was struck by lightning yesterday at around 10:00 a.m. This is a great loss to our family because nothing like this has ever happened before. It is the first time we have experienced such an incident,” Jim told Eye Radio Saturday morning
He added that his father had gone to a stream to hunt ducks, which are commonly found in the area.
“The deceased was 60 years old. He was near the stream looking for ducks that are usually found there, but unfortunately, lightning struck him and he died on the spot,” he said.
The incident occurred near a power station in the Bojur area. Philip Longuta Salah died at the scene, while the injured person was taken for medical treatment.
