The National Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Clement Juma Mbugoniwia, has urged farmers across South Sudan to focus on cultivating crops best suited to their local conditions in an effort to strengthen agricultural value chains, increase productivity and boost commercial agriculture.

Mbugoniwia made the remarks during a meeting in Juba with the Warrap State Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Forestry, Suzy Nyanthel, who briefed him on the state’s ongoing agricultural programs, achievements and the challenges facing farmers.

The minister said greater specialization in crop production would improve yields, expand market opportunities and contribute to the country’s efforts to achieve sustainable food security.

He also reaffirmed the national government’s commitment to supporting state-led agricultural initiatives through policies aimed at increasing food production and promoting sustainable agricultural development.

Mbugoniwia further called on the Warrap State Government to implement the presidential directives issued during President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s recent visit to Kuajok, which are intended to boost domestic food production and reduce dependence on imported food.

The meeting also underscored the importance of continuous training for agricultural extension officers and farmers, as well as integrating livestock production with crop farming to improve overall agricultural output.

Also in attendance were the Undersecretary for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Michael Roberto Kenyi, and the Undersecretary for Cooperatives and Rural Development, Anthony Majak, who contributed to the technical discussions.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security said it will continue working with state governments to strengthen food security and accelerate agricultural transformation across South Sudan.
