President Salva Kiir. (Office of the President).

President Salva Kiir says the liberation struggle is not over citing the continuation of development in the country.

Kiir said despite the achievement of the political struggle for South Sudan, the second struggle which is development is yet to be realized.

This can be achieved, according to the head of state, through unity and peace among the leaders and the  South Sudanese people.

Kiir said it is high time leaders shun division and work towards the development of the country.

“We are going forward, liberation continues, the liberation that ended is the political liberation, but we have not yet reached development liberation, and if we divide ourselves,

“We will not do anything for development. See the distance [years of struggle] you have come from, and what your country has, there is nothing to divide us now,” he said.

“Our liberation has not finished, this is because we have not yet done development, let us all pull our socks up and then we move forward.”

South Sudan is currently governed by a coalition of political parties that fought each other before the signing of the 2018 revitalized peace deal.

The unity government is led by President Kiir with five Vice Presidents.

Each party is allocated a portfolio at the national and state levels to bring about peace, security, and development.

Amid the peace process, South Sudan embarked on the construction of three major highways in 2019.

The government contracted a local company to construct the Juba-Bor highway, while a Chinese company is constructing the Juba-Rumbek highway.
