Lakes MPs reject the new speaker

In Lakes State, a group of MPs in the state assembly is rejecting the new speaker, who was elected in a controversial vote on Friday.

The MPs say the election of the minister of Information, Dhieu Wol, for the job, did not follow the procedures in the regulations of the assembly.

“During the process of nomination one of the MPs, John Marring Makur, stood up and explained the conduct of business and constitution that this constitution could not allow this MPS to be nominated as a speaker simply because the Governor is from their side and Dhieu Wol is supposed to be the speaker simply because he is from greater Yirol,” reported Michael Makuach from Rumbek.

“Some of the MP’s were not happy especially those of Arthur Jeremiah until they almost exchange blows with the other MPs”.

The election came after the former speaker Baipath Majuech was fired by the state care-taker Governor Matur Chut last week.

The removal of Mr Majuech followed calls by some MPs for him to resign. They accused him of poor management, a claim he has since denied.
