Israeli cabinet is expected to approve on Friday a ceasefire and hostage release deal with Hamas that could halt fighting and pave the way for ending 15 months of brutal conflict.

The ceasefire agreement brokered by the U.S., Qatar and Egypt was confirmed on Wednesday and will include the release of hostages taken by the militant group in October 2023 as well as some detained Palestinians.

Qatar’s prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani made the announcement after weeks of negotiations in Doha, The Guardian reported.

There were intensified efforts in recent days to strike out the final details after increased pressure on Israel to reach a deal from US president-elect Donald Trump, according to the Qatari premier.

“The two belligerents in the Gaza Strip have reached a deal on the prisoner and the hostage swap, and [the mediators] announce a ceasefire in the hopes of reaching a permanent ceasefire between the two sides,” Mohammed said.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has also said that a “deal for the release of the hostages” has been reached in Doha and that he has ordered the security cabinet to convene.

His office had accused Hamas on Thursday of reneging on key parts of the agreement to extort last-minute concessions, although it provided no evidence.

Hamas said it was “committed” to the ceasefire agreement, which was announced by the mediators and could go into effect Sunday.
