United Nations says human rights violations are continuing in South Sudan.

Ivan Simonovic, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, After his visit to Malakal in Upper Nile State, described August as a ‘month of rape’.

“Although intensity of fighting as decreased, I have met victims of recent violations; victims of rape, victims who are survivors of killings,” Mr Simonovic stated.

“So violations are ongoing and of course this would be essential to prevent certain violations although some violations of human rights are ongoing.”

Mr Ivan arrived in South Sudan over the weekend.

He met President Salva Kiir and other government officials to discuss ways of improving the human rights situation in the country.

Mr Ivan said he met the leader of the SPLM in Opposition Dr Riek Machar before arriving in Juba.
