The Governance Cluster has proposed measures to strengthen financial accountability and streamline training within South Sudan’s law enforcement by creating a unified police force and establishing a single national police academy.

The proposals were discussed during a meeting chaired by Vice President for Gender and Youth, Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabior, which brought together ministers to review and adopt recommendations on security sector reforms.

Speaking after the meeting, Deputy Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, David Yauyau, said the plan focuses on unifying law enforcement agencies under one police force.

“Of course, the main objective of the proposal is to align the Ministry of Interior’s strategic plan to amalgamate the law enforcement agencies into one unified police force,” Yau Yau said.

“This will create a quality, reliable, and credible police force, standardize internal security systems under the Ministry of Interior, and enhance accountable financial management. Establishing a unified police academy is regarded as a solution to budget constraints, helping reduce operational and training costs while improving personnel efficiency.”

According to Yau Yau, the reforms aim to improve the quality, reliability, and credibility of policing across the country, while addressing financial management and training structures within the force.

The meeting highlighted the government’s commitment to implementing security sector reforms that strengthen law enforcement efficiency and accountability in South Sudan.
