Don’t disagree on compromise deal, warring parties told

Community Empowerment for Progress Organization is urging the warring parties not to disagree on the draft Compromise Agreement before they return to Addis Ababa next month.

The warring parties will return to the negotiation table in Addis Ababa on the 5th of August.

The IGAD-Plus Mediation team handed over the draft of the Compromise Agreement to the three groups on Friday.

They include the Government, SPLM-SPLA In Opposition and the Former Political Detainees.

Addressing reporters in Juba, the Executive Director of CEPO, Edmond Yakani, said his organization welcomes the draft agreement, and describes it as a serious move from IGAD-Plus mediators.

“We feel 80% or 80 plus of the contentious issues were resolved in the draft agreement,” Mr Yakani said.

According to the draft compromise agreement, 16 ministerial positions go to the government, 10 positions to SPLM in Opposition, and 2 positions go to the former political detainees.

“They are divided into clusters. So, this is one of the areas of disagreement which we feel still the two negotiating parties may raise concerns over, and that is why we are taking this opportunity to urge them not to raise concerns that still derails the process or it still hinders the process to attain peace in the next round,” he added.

However, he urged the warring parties to make concessions on the proposed ministerial portfolios in the draft agreement, and to make public consultations with other political parties and the citizens.
