A Chinese delegation has arrived in South Sudan for a 20-day technical assessment mission as part of plans to develop a smart city project in Juba aimed at improving security and urban management ahead of the December general elections.
According to the Ministry of Interior, the delegation will conduct assessments at about 50 locations across the capital, including key government facilities, major roads and other strategic sites. The findings will inform a comprehensive implementation plan for the proposed initiative.
The assessment mission was discussed during a meeting between the Minister of Interior, Gen. Aleu Ayieny Aleu, and a Chinese delegation led by counselor Mr. Li Wancheng.
The talks focused on infrastructure development and the integration of modern technology and advanced security systems to support the transformation of Juba into a smart city.
The two sides also reviewed implementation plans, including technical assessments and coordination mechanisms required for the project’s execution.
Speaking during the meeting, Zhang said China remains committed to strengthening its partnership with South Sudan and supporting efforts to improve urban management and security through modern technology.
He said the assessments would help identify the infrastructure and technical requirements needed for the successful implementation of the project.
Minister Aleu welcomed the delegation on behalf of President Salva Kiir and the people of South Sudan, describing the visit as an important step toward strengthening security in the capital.
He expressed optimism that the initiative would improve security infrastructure and help transform Juba into one of Africa’s leading smart cities ahead of the December elections.
