Mother dumps newborn baby in latrine, escapes Rumbek hospital

Police in Rumbek town of Lakes State are searching for a mother who dumped her newborn baby girl in a pit latrine at the state hospital last evening.

According to the State Police spokesperson, a woman reported to the health facility late last evening when the nurses attended to her before taking her details.

However, Major General Elijah Mabor Makuac said, after giving birth, the lactating mother escaped from the maternity ward while the nurses were attending to another critical case.

At around 6:00 AM Saturday, an in-patient who went to ease found and reported that he found a baby crying inside the pit latrine.

Upon checking, the medics found the baby belongs to the woman who escaped from the hospital and retrieved her alive.

“One of the patients went to the latrine for a short call and he noted the cry of the child inside the hole.

“So he reported the case to the staff of the hospital and one of the staff got in the latrine and recovered the child alive.”

Officer Mabor says police personnel have been sent to the residential areas to search for the mother.

“The report was given to us and we sent police personnel to go and collect the information so that it can help them in searching for the mother.

‘So now they are still looking after the mother and they didn’t report back yet.”

 

Yakani urges Dr. Bak to toughen financial reforms, fund R-ARCSS

An activist has urged the newly appointed Finance Minister to take bold steps to bring reforms in the sector and ensure the peace agreement is fully funded.

Mr. Edmund Yakani who is Executive Director of CEPO says Finance Minister Dr Bak Barnaba Chol Bak has a critical role to play in ensuring the country’s transition from violence to peace and political stability.

In a five-point bulletin, Yakani urged Minister, Dr. Barnaba to prioritize the allocation of funds for a peace road map -including the transitional security arrangements and electoral processes.

On the national budget before the national legislature, he called for proper operationalization of the new improved salary scale for civil servants and soldiers.

Yakani also stressed the need for the minister to commit to yet-to-be passed the national budget and exercise regular reporting to the August house as demanded by the financial year 2023/2024 and other legal frameworks.

On financial reforms, he said it is incumbent upon the Minister of Finance to enforce transparency and accountability through the operationalization of Anti-Corruption Commission functions.

“The new Minister of Finance and Planning is required to really take a stronger stand without any form of compromise or fear to deliver the required Financial reforms in all sectors of finance and economy as required by the provisions of chapter 4 of the R-ARCSS,

“The new Minister of Finance and Planning should really take the decision for stopping the wrong practices observed in the Ministry of Finance and Planning where individuals are receiving financial gifts or assistance, and fake business persons access income,”

Yakani warned the Minister against the concern raised by US Ambassador to South Sudan regarding the country’s over-reliance on donors’ support and appealed to him to invest the oil revenue in the agriculture sector to improve food security, and provide social services to the population.”

“CEPO is urging the new minister of finance and planning to really take the alert raised by USA Ambassador to South Sudan recently that the country should stop depending on donors,

“This advice is critical because investing the oil revenue for strengthening the production sector is the strategy to fighting poverty, improving food security, and creating employment opportunities for the population,” he said.

New finance minister takes oath, to fight economic meltdown

President Salva Kiir on Friday tasked the newly appointed Finance Minister Dr. Baak Barnaba Chol to urgently address the economic decline that has hit the country.

Dr. Baak received the president’s directives shortly after being sworn in.

Kiir reportedly told the new Minister to stay focused on the job and “not to accept being intimidated by those people who want to run away with public money”.

“President Kiir assured the new Minister of his absolute cooperation as he tackled the economic reforms agenda,” according to the Office of the President.

Minister Bak said he will work to rein on the inflation, while paying salaries and wages on time.

He reportedly promised a strong response to the country’s economic crisis and strengthen the South Sudanese pound which he says was undervalued.

The oath taking ceremony was officiated by Chief Justice Chan Reec Madut.

Dr. Bak Barnaba Chol was appointed on Thursday replacing former Minister Dr. Dier Tong Ngor who has been at the helm of the finance docket since 2022.
