Cantonment: JMEC emphasizes security and inclusivity

The only way forward for establishing cantonment areas and final security arrangements in the country is inclusivity in the implementation of the peace agreement, the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission has said.

The JMEC Deputy Chairperson Lt. General Augustino Njoroge made the statement this morning during the opening of a two day workshop on the cantonment of forces in the country.

According to the peace agreement, the cantonment process involves settling troops from both the government and the opposition sides in military camps and barracks in designated areas around the country.

“Cantonment within the context of the ARCSS in the current security environment will not be an easy task, and will require a tremendous amount of planning, coordination and cooperation within the parties,” Lt. Augustino said in statement.

He did not mention any instances of insecurity, but JMEC ceasefire monitors earlier reported some violations around the country.

“We strongly call on all parties to lay down their weapons and engage in peaceful and inclusive implementation process that will enable a safe and effective cantonment process.”
