Bishop calls for safety of detained ex-governor, Bakosoro

The Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio has appealed for safety of the former Governor of Western Equatoria State, Joseph Bangasi Bakosoro.

It says the government should clarify his whereabouts.
MPs in the Equatoria Caucus in the national assembly said this week that Mr Bakosoro was arrested in his house on Sunday night after dismissal from office.
“It is now five days and no news of him has been communicated to his family, the general public and the people of Western Equatoria in particular,” says Bishop Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kusuala of the Tambura-Yambio diocese in a statement.
The bishop says Mr. Bakosoro was sick at the time of arrest and needed medication.
“I request the government to release news, to assume responsibility for the life and wellbeing of the former governor,” he said.
He says the delay in communication by the government on Mr. Bakosoro’s whereabouts may lead to rumours which may mislead the public.
The Bishop says Mr Bakosoro should be allowed to express his innocence in a court of law under the transitional constitution.
He has also called for calm among the people of Western Equatoria. Eye Radio’s efforts to get a comment from government officials have not been successful.
