At least 48 people were killed Friday in a horrific accident after a truck lost control and rammed into pedestrians and other vehicles in Kenya, the police said.

The accident happened at 6: 30 PM along Nakuru-Kericho Highway near the shore of Lake Victoria.

The truck was reportedly traveling to Nakuru, when it lost control and it plunged into several minibuses and private vehicles before falling in a ditch nearby.

“So far we can confirm 48 dead and we are suspecting one or two are still trapped under the truck,” a police commander named Geoffrey Mayek told AFP news agency.

According to Mayek, another 30 people had been seriously injured and rushed to various hospitals, as the security official warns the toll could rise.

Images televised on the local media showed scenes of devastation at the site of the crash, with the mangled wreckage of several vehicles as rescue workers hunted in darkness for people feared trapped.

Kenya’s president William Ruto expressed condolences after the accident, which took place at a busy area known as Londiani junction.

The Kenyan Red Cross, which sent ambulances and rescue workers to the scene, told AFP heavy rains were hindering rescue operations.
