At least 25 people including four servicemen were killed and 20 others wounded after armed attackers raided Warrap town, the headquarters of Tonj North County, early Thursday, according to the Warrap State government.
Warrap State Minister of Information William Wol Mayom Bol said the attack occurred at about 6 a.m. and was allegedly carried out by armed criminals from Majak and Madhiath Payams in Tonj North County, with support from assailants from Ngapagok Payam in Tonj East County.
“Yes, at 6 a.m. this morning, 9 July 2026, we confirmed an attack that occurred in Warrap town, the headquarters of Tonj North County,” Wol told reporters.
He said 14 of those killed were from the side of Warrap town, including four members of the organized forces. One of the officers killed was a colonel in the Prison Service. Eleven of the dead were among the attackers.
Of the 20 people wounded, 16 were from Warrap town, including Executive Chief of Lou Mawien/Ariik, while four were from the attackers’ side, the minister said.
“The criminals targeted the commissioner’s guesthouse, the Prison Service headquarters, the police headquarters and other government institutions within Warrap town,” Wol said.
He added that the attackers also raided 208 head of cattle during the assault.
The state government condemned the attack and said additional security forces had been deployed to restore order.
“We have strongly condemned the incident, and the state government has directed Division 11 Commander Major General Rian to join the local organized forces of Tonj North County,” Wol said.
He said the security situation had since been brought under control.
“Currently, the situation is contained, and a curfew has been imposed from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. for seven days,” he said.
Authorities did not immediately announce any arrests or provide further details on the motive behind the attack. Investigations are ongoing.
