NGOs that are not transparent and have no tangible programs will be expelled, authorities in Yei River Municipality has said.

The acting mayor of the town, Silvano Ali Sangusa, said plans are underway to screen the NGOs operating in the area.

“Most of them are here and they stay for few weeks and run to Nairobi and Kampala wasting money which they have brought in the name of the people of South Sudan,” Mr Sangusa said.

Some NGOs have appealed to the county administration to consider their achievements in national development.

Angelo Diyuk is an emergency coordinator for CARITAS. He said: “All NGOs working at the grass root levels should also acknowledge the fact that they work with the government and the government should understand what has been achieved by the NGOs.”

“Most NGOs have their budgets coming from abroad and these budgets have been restricted from the donor’s side,” he added.

The threat to expel some NGOs came at a joint meeting of local government officials with the NGOs yesterday.
