The Lakes region is currently under a mandatory disarmament exercise, but armed civilian attacks have persisted.

Some MPs in the Lakes State parliament have called for resignation of the speaker, Baipath Majuec.

They accuse him of administrative weakness. Mr Baithpath has denied the charge.

The MPs say Mr Baipath has allowed other members to continue receiving their salaries without coming to work.

They say the speaker in turn protect them by claiming that the MPs have taken permission to go on leave.

Yomjiima Philip, one of the members, says the continued absence of some MPs has paralyzed the house since March because there has been no quorum.

“We have never attended any sitting because of the failure of the leadership. There is a vacuum. Why? Since there is rampant killing in our state, our assembly doesn’t even say anything about it because the leadership is not working,” she said. “He should have to resign.”

Mr Baipath has denied any wrong doing.

He told Eye Radio that he has instructed the state government chief whip to discipline MPs who are not attending the sittings regularly:

“If….people are not attending, it is the chief whip of the assembly who should call for the parliamentary caucus of the assembly and discuss and find out the reason for it, because the solution of the speaker is not the problem. It is the law we have made that we have to respect.”

Mr Baipath says some politicians have influenced the MPs to avoid sittings in order paralyze the state parliament.
