The Governor of Eastern Equatoria State, Louis Lobong Lojore has ordered an immediate stop to the illegal extraction of sand beneath the vital Katiko Bridge, which connects Torit to Juba and other parts of the state.

Governor Lobong issued the directive after intercepting dumper trucks allegedly scooping sand directly from beneath the bridge in Kapoeta South County on Friday morning, according to his office.

Katiko Bridge serves as a key link connecting Kapoeta, Torit, and Juba, supporting the movement of people, goods, and services.

Governor Lobong said the illegal sand extraction has weakened the bridge’s foundation and increased the risk of damage from flowing water.

He condemned the destruction of public infrastructure and directed relevant authorities to take legal action against those responsible.

The governor warned that anyone found damaging government infrastructure through illegal sand collection or other destructive activities would be held accountable under the law.

He said the government remains committed to protecting public infrastructure and urged communities to report any activities that threaten roads, bridges, and other public facilities.
