UNMISS says the lack of water for 20,000 Internally Displaced Persons being protected at its bases in Malakal has been solved.

Pipes supplying water to UNMISS camps were damaged during the recent fighting between government forces and forces loyal to the former Vice President Dr. Riek Machar in Malakal.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in South Sudan, Hilde Johnson, said, the water is in full swing and that is no longer an issue.  This situation is now calm and it is contained, we had difficulties with inter-communal tensions and we are now containing the situation, and our formed police units have done a fantastic job in containing it.

Madam Johnson urged all humanitarian agencies to continue to operate as there is a serious need of assistance to those affected by the ongoing conflict.  As head of UNMISS as well, she also called for both parties to respect the agreement they signed last month.

She said, “It is absolutely fundamental that the cessation of hostilities is respected and that we see a situation where the attacks such as the attack on Malakal town is not repeated and that all violations of the cessation of hostilities agreement stop, and  we get the monitoring and verification mechanism by IGAD established as soon as possible”.
