The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has advised its citizens against traveling to South Sudan and two other East African countries over concerns related to Ebola, although no outbreak of the deadly virus has been confirmed in South Sudan.
In a travel advisory issued on Saturday, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged nationals and residents to avoid travel to South Sudan, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo due to the evolving public health situation linked to Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
The advisory comes as neighbouring Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo continue to battle outbreaks of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has reportedly killed dozens of people and infected hundreds in the two countries.
The UAE’s travel warning for South Sudan comes days after the United States issued a similar advisory for its citizens.
No Ebola case has been reported in South Sudan. However, the World Health Organization has warned that countries in the region face a high risk of the disease spreading across borders.
The Ministry of Health says the country remains on high alert but has urged the public not to panic.
The ministry says surveillance teams have been deployed at border entry points with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo to help prevent the virus from entering the country.
The Ministry of Health continues to call on citizens to report any suspected cases and seek medical attention immediately if they develop symptoms associated with Ebola.
